Distillery: Islay Single Malt
Vintage/age: 1991 – 34 years old
Cask Type: refill
Description/Flavour Profile: It’s been since our 5th anniversary that we released one of these spectacular old Islays (which is almost 50 releases ago, time flies!). This is the first time we’ve bottled a 1991 and what a surprise it was. As we are extremely picky with our selections, we tend to expect the worst when tasting uncommon vintages. In this case the attitude was: “Probably won’t be as good as the 1989’s…”. But lo and behold, even we turn soft in the face of greatness. Mellow sweet mineral smoke with polish and fruit. Or in ‘Whiskyfunian’ terms: A freshly polished Italian leather shoe being used to crush out a mint cigarette whilst eating freshly toasted sourdough with the thinnest layer of mirabelle jam.
Highly drinkable, yet highly complex and everlasting. Try not to drink with a straw, however tempting.
We had the opportunity to buy 2 casks of this wonderful spirit. Each with their own distinct nuances. Both stunning. The other cask was released a week ago and shared between Passion For Whisky in the Netherlands and Lucky Choice in China (We’ve been told that all bottles in Europe have been sold out, so thanks for your enthusiasm! We think China still needs to release)
ABV: 50.6%
